Marina Koutsou
Lykeio Polis Chrysochous, Cyprus
Marina Koutsouis a chemistry teacher. Her student's age is ranging from 16 to 18 years old.
Marinais an active use of ISE resources and participates regularly in ISE activities in Greece. She also submitted an entry to the 2014-2015 Learning with Light competition, which was of such high quality that it was Highly Commended.
Learning with Light competition entry
Marina's entry to the competition is called "Fluorescence". Describing her entry Marina say:
The activity introduces the phenomenon of fluorescence. We performed hands on experiments using ultraviolet light and simple materials containing fluorescent substances. Students became aware how fluorescent substances can be used in everyday life applications as well as in the medical and biological sciences.
Considering the big ideas of science, that 'All material in the Universe is made of very small particles', 'Objects can affect other objects at a distance' and 'The total amount of energy in the Universe is always the same but energy can be transformed when things change or are made to happen' i decided to study with my students the phenomenon of fluorescence and its applications in everyday life.
Here are some of the resources Marina used in her entry:
- The ISE resource Glowing water
- The Royal Society of Chemistry resource: Exhibition Chemistry: Fluorescence
- The Royal Society of Chemistry resource: The Solar Spark: Chlorophyll Fluorescence
- The Edison Tech Center resource: The Fluorescent Lamp
- The nobelprize.org resource: The Fluorescence Microscope
