Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Information Technology FIT
The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft zur Foerderung der angewandten Forschung e.V. (Fraunhofer Society for the Advancement of Applied Research) is Europe's leading research organization for applied research. The Institute for Applied Information Technology FIT is one of the 58 Fraunhofer institutes and has a staff of about 100 people. The main work regarding this project will be carried out by the Collaborative Virtual and Augmented Environments (CVAE) department. The department has comprehensive experience in the development and integration of Mixed Reality solutions. It has been partner in numerous national and international projects; more recent science learning related involvement include the projects CONNECT and EXPLOAR. CVAE belongs to the Computer Supported Collaborative Work (CSCW) division.
The division is focusing on communities and cooperation, social computing and cooperation awareness and has expertise in the development of community platforms in the e-learning domain. Several ECfunded research projects have been coordinated within CSCW. The division has developed the BSCW Shared Workspace System, which won the European Software Innovation Prize (ESIP96). It was extended to the learning platform CSCL in the ITCOLE project (Innovative technologies for collaborative learning and knowledge building). The team will be involved in WP5 (Orchestration and Integration of Learning Technologies) in the making of tangible interfaces that give access to learning activities with the support of augmented and virtual reality.
