Masterclasses in Argos high-schools
On the 3rd of February, 2014, Professor Christine Kourkoumelis of the University of Athens presented to the general public of the area of Argos the recent results concerning the discovery of the Higgs boson in an event organized by the 3rd High School of Argos. During the presentation, Professor Kourkoumelis also had the chance to talk about the ongoing educational projects, namely the Go-Lab project and the Inspiring Science Education project.
The following day, the second HYPATIA Masterclass in Argos took place in the 3rd High School of Argos, with the participation of more than 50 students from different schools of the Argolida county. The students came to the school with their teachers and had the chance to perform hands-on exercises processing data from the ATLAS experiment at CERN. They were first introduced to the physics of the ATLAS experiment by Professor Christine Kourkoumelis. A live connection with the Control Center of the ATLAS experiment gave them the chance to get acquainted with the instrumentation used in the experiment and ask questions to the scientists at CERN. Finally, a detailed introduction to the HYPATIA software was provided by Stelios Vourakis, after which the hands-on exercise -carried out with the help of George Vasileiadis- for the rediscovery of the Z boson and the Higgs boson took place.
