Invited talk in opening session of Greek Scientix conference entitled “The Inquiry Based Science Education applied to the school class”
The conference was organized jointly by Ellinogermaniki Agogi and the Greek Physical Society (EEF) and was addressed to Greek teachers of secondary schools (senior high schools). The objective was the exchange of experiences on Inquiry Learning Physics education and the improvement of their teaching. During the opening of the conference in a talk entitled “The experiment of the century in the school class”, the educational tools of the ATLAS experiment together with the ISE Project and its goals were presented to an audience of about 40 teachers.
Quite a few teachers expressed their wish -after the end of the session- to have a mini-masterclass conducted by the IASA team in their schools, as well as their possible involvement in ISE through a school action plan which would take place in a smaller school class, consisting of selected and highly motivated students.
The teachers were introduced to the world of high energy physics and the work being done at CERN. They were shown how to get hands-on experience of the new discoveries in physics and how to use the available tools and activities though an a inquiry based method. This way they were provided with resources for bridging the gap between active research and schools. The teachers also became familiar with the ISE Project and several possible action plans for their schools were discussed.
