Eratosthenes Experiment at University of Bayreuth

On the 21st of March, the equinox day, at 12.32, it was possible to calculate the circumference of the earth by measuring the shadow of a one meter high stick placed vertical on the ground. This was done by us and around 400 other institutions all around the world. After this Eratosthenes Experiment, we discussed about how to utilize these kinds of experiments in an inquiry based school lesson. We all realized how easy it is to integrate inquiry based science education in teaching. All participants agreed that this shouldn't be a one-time practice and that such an experience could be made available to all our students.
